POTOMAC, MD

Rooted within the leafy landscape of Potomac, Maryland, this residence is conceived as a study in contrast—where strong architectural gestures are softened by natural materials, sculptural forms, and an atmosphere of understated warmth. A defining architectural feature is the vaulted ceiling, where dark-stained timber beams create a powerful rhythm overhead. A linear skylight is carefully integrated between the beams, drawing daylight deep into the central living and dining spaces and emphasizing the height and geometry of the roofline. As the light shifts throughout the day, it moves across the plaster walls, wood, and furnishings, giving the interior an evolving sense of depth and atmosphere. Throughout the home, dark-stained wood continues this architectural language through arched openings, window surrounds, and richly detailed millwork. Against warm plaster walls and abundant natural light, these elements create a sense of permanence while framing views of the surrounding landscape. The material palette is deliberately restrained yet expressive. Dramatically veined marble is paired with deep green cabinetry, dark oak, aged brass, ivory upholstery, and subtle touches of rust and olive. In the kitchen, monumental stone surfaces and illuminated glass cabinetry bring depth and refinement, while the adjoining dining and living spaces balance architectural scale with curved furnishings, tactile textiles, and collected artwork. Recurring arches establish a visual language that carries throughout the residence—from the expansive living spaces to quieter moments within the foyer and breakfast nook. A marble fireplace anchors the living room beneath the exposed beams, while the home office takes on a more enveloping character through floor-to-ceiling olive millwork and warm metal detailing. Sculptural lighting and carefully composed objects add intimacy without overwhelming the architecture. The result is a home that feels both grounded and expressive—rooted in traditional ideas of craftsmanship and material permanence, yet interpreted through a distinctly contemporary lens. Natural light, architectural rhythm, proportion, and materiality connect each space, creating a residence that feels collected, timeless, and quietly cinematic.
